An Army private who successfully challenged an order to discharge him because he was overweight, died yesterday in Lifford, Co Donegal. Colleagues said last night that Pte Vincent Crawford was pronounced dead on arrival in hospital in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Pte Crawford admitted in the High Court in January that he was overweight but said this had not interfered with his duties. He was still serving at Lifford military post at the time of his death. He had served more than 20 years in the Defence Forces.
