A man in whose car a passenger was killed when he drove through a red light has been given a three-year suspended jail sentence and fined by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
John Wynne's car spun out of control after he failed to stop at the light on the Ballymun Road and killed Gavin Bedford (20) when it hit a metal railing. Wynne (22) of Belclare Drive, Ballymun, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving on September 21st, 1998.
Judge Kieran O'Connor told him he had inflicted a far greater punishment on himself than the court could ever impose. He noted the Bedford family had no desire to see him jailed. Wynne was fined £2,000 and banned from driving for six years.
