She was in Japan as part of a one-year study abroad programme and was due to return home to Ireland early next month.

A spokeswoman for DCU said the university was liaising with the family.

“The staff and students of DCU were saddened to learn of the death of one of their students while studying abroad in Japan,” the spokeswoman said.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends at this very distressing time.

“We are liaising closely with the Irish Embassy in Japan and with the student’s family here in Ireland to provide support and assistance to them.”

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson confirmed yesterday that the Furlong family was receiving consular assistance from the Irish Embassy in Tokyo.

The circumstances of the student’s death are as yet unclear and Japanese police are now investigating.
