A detective who worked on the Jill Dando murder hunt has been ordered to resign for leaking information to the media, British police revealed today.
Det Con Robert McKenzie was found guilty of failing to disclose contact with the media and failing to obey a lawful order.
He was "required to resign" after he was found guilty by a disciplinary tribunal last week, Scotland Yard said.
All the officers working on the high-profile inquiry were told not to discuss the case with the media without revealing what they had said or without prior approval.
DC McKenzie was working with the central area Organised Crime Squad when he was suspended in January 2000. A Scotland Yard spokeswoman refused to reveal what he had told the media.
- Another detective on the Dando case is to face an internal inquiry after he was cleared of harassing a married woman witness.
DC Peter Bartlett (40) was removed from the murder hunt after he had an affair with Charlotte de Rosnay, who lived next door to Miss Dando, during the investigation.
He was charged with harassing her but the case was dropped yesterday when Mrs de Rosnay said she wanted to withdraw the allegation.
DC Bartlett has been placed on restricted duties but has not been suspended.
