Organisers of the annual Daffodil Day held yesterday are hoping that at least £1.75 million was raised to fund free specialist cancer nursing services. More than 5,000 volunteers organised activities and collected funds.
The Irish Cancer Society announced that proceeds from Daffodil Day 2001 would, for the first time, fund new psychology and play services for children with cancer at Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin.
Other services which benefit are home-care nurses who provide medical assistance to 5,000 patients with advanced cancer each year, night nurses who give care in the home to some 1,000 families annually, cancer liaison nurses who provide psychological support in seven hospitals, and Cancer Helpline nurses who respond to 500 callers monthly.
