Daffodil Day aims to raise €4.5 million

Some 5,000 people will take to the streets today in a bid to raise €4.5 million for the Irish Cancer Society's (ICS) annual Daffodil Day.

Money raised will fund the society's free night nursing service for patients at the advanced stage of the illness, hospital-based cancer liaison nurses, cancer home care teams, and the cancer information services helpline which handled 12,000 calls last year.

The ICS recently predicted up to 30,000 new cases of cancer would be diagnosed every year by 2010.

It said general neglect of healthy lifestyles, as well as an increase in population age, were to blame for the pending 62 per cent increase.

Further details on the day's events can be obtained at www.cancer.ie
