A retired army officer today lost his High Court bid to stop US military planes refuelling at Shannon Airport.

The court ruled it was not possible to interfere with a decision made by the Government to allow stopovers at the Co Clare facility.

Retired army commandant Mr Edward Horgan, with an address at Newtown, Castletroy, Co Limerick, had claimed the activities at Shannon breach the constitutional provisions governing Ireland's participation in war and conduct of foreign relations.

He began his action against the State and Government at the start of April. It came after months of campaigning by anti-war protesters, who set up a "peace camp" at Shannon and staged numerous rallies through the town.
