A woman accused of killing an expectant mother and cutting the baby from her womb will appear in court in the US today.

Ms Lisa Montgomery (36) is being held at the Wyandotte County Detention Centre in Kansas City, Kansas.

Authorities have not said whether her court appearance will be in Kansas or Missouri, where the grisly killing took place.

Ms Montgomery, of Melvern, Kansas, is accused of killing Ms Stinnett on Thursday, removing the baby from her womb and trying to pass it off as her own to family and friends. The baby, a girl named Victoria Jo, was later recovered unharmed.

Authorities said Ms Montgomery confessed to strangling Mrs Stinnett, cutting out the foetus and taking the baby back to Kansas. Ms Montgomery, a mother of two, told her husband she had gone into labour while shopping in Topeka, authorities said.

She had lied to family and friends about being pregnant with twins and suffering a miscarriage with one of the babies, investigators said. Detectives doubt whether she was pregnant at all.
