Dublin City Council, on behalf of the four Dublin local authorities, is to appeal a High Court decision which stopped it from controlling the waste collection market in the city.

Mr Justice Liam McKechnie last year found the authorities had breached competition law by abusing their dominant position in the household waste collection market to remove rival private operators.

Private waste collection firms Greenstar and Panda took separate cases against the decision. Mr Justice McKechnie found in favour of Panda and said Greenstar, which had undertaken a separate but linked case, would also succeed against the council.

The city council is to appeal on all grounds.
