A MAJOR campaign to promote Cork as an attractive marine visitor destination will be launched next month when tourism and local authority interests will host a large display at one of Europe's biggest marine shows.

A delegation involving Cork County Council and Fáilte Ireland South will attend the Grand Pavois in La Rochelle on France's Atlantic coast, which is expected to attract more than 100,000 visitors from throughout Europe.

Cork's delegation will be led by round-the-world race winner Damian Foxall and the Irish exhibition stand will be the largest at the event, showcasing foods, drinks and crafts as well as water sports and tourism activities.

Mayor of Cork county Cllr Noel Harrington said it was a huge privilege for the county to attend the Grand Pavois, which, since 1973, has grown to become a major event in the marine sector. This year it will host 850 exhibitors from 30 countries.

Deputy county manager Theresa White said Cork's attendance stemmed from the close relationship that has been forged. "We've received great support from La Rochelle Chamber of Commerce so now is our time to show them what we in Ireland and Cork county stand for."

Fiona Buckley of Fáilte Ireland South said the show offers a huge opportunity to Irish tourism. "We have so much to offer in the south, and we are really looking forward to the trip to celebrate all that our country has to offer."

The Irish Hotel Federation, Cork Marine Cluster, Cork Airport Authority, Cork County Enterprise Board and Aer Arann are lending their support to the event, which runs from September 10th to 15th at Les Minimes harbour.
