Breeo Foods, formerly the consumer foods division of Dairygold, has announced the loss of 70 jobs at its plant in Mitchellstown, Co Cork.

The company confirmed this afternoon that its meat manufacturing plant at Cahir Hill would close over the course of the next number of months.

The company, which is part of Reox Holdings a spin-off of Dairygold, said it would engage with staff and union representatives to determine severance arrangements.

The Cahir Hill plant was primarily engaged in the manufacture of pork products as well as own label brands for major multiples. According to the company, these products will now be outsourced under license.

A statement issued by the company said: "This is a very sad day for everyone connected with the Company"

"The closure has been forced on the business by events beyond the company's control. The consumer foods business in Ireland is operating in an increasingly competitive market with a continually rising cost base."

"The substantial continued growth of low margin own label products has impacted on the ability of traditional high cost manufacturers to maintain a competitive edge," he said.
