A young woman who was badly burned as a schoolgirl after her clothes came in contact with a cooker in the kitchen of her home lost her action for damages against the Eastern Health Board yesterday. The board had provided financial assistance for the purchase of the cooker.

The High Court case was taken by Annemarie O Laoire, now 19, suing through her mother, Mrs Theresa O Laoire, of Sheepmoor Way, Blanchardstown, Co Dublin, in relation to the incident on October 12th, 1992.

On that day, Annemarie O Laoire was preparing food, the judge said. Her tracksuit came in contact with the left front ring and her jacket caught fire. She ran outside and, with the assistance of a neighbour, the fire was put out.

The judge said it was a case of the board coming to the assistance of a family in need. He was satisfied no negligence attached to it and dismissed the claim.
