Kigali - Rebel fighters killed at least 210 government troops in two bouts of fresh fighting on the north-western front in the Democratic Republic of the Congo yesterday, a rebel leader said.

Mr Jean-Pierre Bemba, who heads the Ugandan-backed Congolese Liberation Movement (MLC), said that 150 government infantry were killed during an attack on the rebel-held fishing village of Kuka, about 700 km northwest of Kinshasa. In another clash, he said his fighters ambushed and killed 60 government soldiers moving on five boats down the Congo river near the village of Libanda, north of Kuka.
