Fire destroyed a number of rooms after an arson attack on a Co Down school overnight.

Police said two classrooms and a store at the De La Salle High School in Downpatrick were extensively damaged.

A sum of money was also taken from the premises.

Other classrooms were also smoke-damaged in the attack.

"A considerable amount of the students' own GCSE coursework in preparation for exams was also destroyed in the fire," a police spokesman said.

Fire officers said up to three separate blazes were started deliberately using mounds of children's books and artwork.

Witnesses reported seeing a number of males acting suspiciously around the school at 6.30pm. Anybody with information is asked to contact police.
