New York - Former US president Mr Bill Clinton was drawn into another controversy yesterday, denying he knew that his brother-in-law, Mr Hugh Rodham, had been paid for helping obtain presidential pardons.

According to US media reports, the brother of former first lady Ms Hillary Clinton received some $200,000 for helping obtain a pardon from Mr Clinton for Mr Glenn Braswell, a businessman under investigation for tax and fraud; and a commutation of a prison sentence for a drug trafficker, Mr Carlos Vignali.

Mr Clinton responded in a statement: "Neither Hillary nor I had any knowledge of such payments. We are deeply disturbed by these reports and have insisted that Hugh returns any money received."
