Athletics:Irish athlete Gareth Turnbull has been cleared of a doping allegation and is now seeking compensation from the sport's authorities who accused him in the first place.

The 1500metre runner from Belfast hit out at those running athletics in Ireland after the threat of a two-year ban was lifted.

"My case has unfortunately illustrated how the good name of athletics can be brought into disrepute not by an athlete, but rather from an over-zealous anti-doping programme run by the Irish Sports Council, intent on obtaining an outcome in the best interests not of fairness or justice but of its own sporting and political agenda," said Turnbull.

"I am further saddened by the complete lack of support and sensitivity afforded to me by Athletics Ireland during this entire investigation and only hope that both organisations will be sincere in their willingness to accept the nature of their failings and learn from them so that any future cases will be treated in a much more professional manner."

The 27-year-old's sporting career was plunged into doubt after a drugs test showed higher than normal levels of testosterone last September. The test was taken following a two-week holiday and the morning after the runner was out socialising with friends.

Other tests taken before and since then returned normal results.

After the Irish Sport Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel ruled the heightened testosterone sample was probably alcohol induced, Turnbull was relieved at being completely exonerated of ill-founded accusations.

Turnbull is now free to compete again and the decision has offered some closure for him and his family after four months of stress but he insisted his fight was not over.

"My case does raise serious questions about the conduct of the Irish Sports Council and in the coming days we will be pursuing answers and recompense for the damage caused," vowed the runner.
