Seven Chinese men appeared before Galway District Court yesterday arising out of a Garda investigation into the demanding of protection money from a Salthill restaurateur.

Mr Tang Zong Zhen of Jervis Street, Dublin 1, was charged with demanding with menaces for gain at Lenaboy, Salthill, on May 29th and with assaulting Anthony Tsang on June 15th. He was previously charged under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

Mr Li Guang Jung of Morehampton Road, Dublin, and Mr Shi Ming Chew of Bayside Square South, Sutton, Co Dublin, were charged with being in possession of offensive weapons, namely four iron bars.

Supt Michael Curley told the court that he wanted time to check their alien status here and Judge John Garavan remanded them in custody until next Wednesday.

Mr Michael Wong, Mr Jimmy Li and Mr Ziaoqwing Wong were charged with having no identification as to nationality, no Irish visa and no registration papers.

Mr Cui Hongri, also known as Toby Zhing Tao, was charged with having no work permit. He had identity papers and was released on bail.
