Carlton Cinema planning appeal postponed

The oral hearing on the future of the former Carlton Cinema on Dublin's O'Connell St has been postponed until June 5th.

The oral hearing on the future of the former Carlton Cinema on Dublin's O'Connell St has been postponed until June 5th.

According to a spokeswoman for An Bord Pleanála, the hearing was postponed because Dublin City Council had failed to provide enough information on their proposals for the site to all objectors.

Members of the Carlton Group, which secured planning permission in 1999 from An Bord Pleanála for a €170 Millennium Mall, have objected to a compulsory purchase order (CPO) by Dublin City Council on the cinema and other assembled properties.

The properties include an adjoining site which extends to Moore Street and has been derelict since the late 1970s, an office block occupied by Fingal County Council, Dr Quirkey's Good Time Emporium and Carroll's Irish Gift Stores.

The Carlton Group has permission for a 50,000-square-metre shopping and entertainment centre on the 2.5-acre site but has so far failed to get the venture started.

Dublin City Council says the intention is not to implement the CPO if the existing owners are in a position to go ahead with the scheme.
