A canoeist was air lifted to safety by an Air Corps helicopter yesterday after getting into trouble while on a canoeing trip at Strandhill Beach, Sligo.

The Air Corps Dauphin helicopter based at Finner, Co Donegal, responded to a 999 call shortly after lunchtime yesterday when four canoeists were reported to be in difficulty.

Three of the canoeists made it safely ashore but one had to be airlifted to shore after large swells and strong currents prevented him from paddling back to land himself.

The man was taken to Sligo Regional Hospital and kept in overnight for observation.
