Age Action Ireland has urged people to protect the most vulnerable of older people during the current cold snap.
Eamon Timmins of Age Action Ireland said the cold weather presented a challenge for older people, especially those living alone.
“We are reminding people to call in on their older neighbours to ensure they have enough fuel and basics such as milk and bread. Older people can also play their part by keeping in phone contact with each other and with their family and neighbours.”
Mr Timmins also recommended that people maintain a comfortable temperature in the rooms they are occupying.
Age Action Ireland advises older people to: wear multiple layers of clothing; remain active by exercising daily, but avoid risks in wet or icy conditions; have at least one hot meal a day and sip hot drinks regularly; stock up on provisions in case there is icy weather and you cannot go out; seal gaps around windows and doors and insulate your home.
