It was January 1961 and the speaker told a lunch meeting of the Publicity Club of Ireland that, scientifically speaking, as modern cities go, Dublin didn't have a traffic problem. "But it is certain that if the present growth in traffic continues and nothing is done about it, we will have an insoluble one in five or six years' time."

The speaker, obviously ahead of his time, was none other than a lowly parliamentary secretary by the name of Charles J. Haughey. The quote comes from the The Publicity Club of Ireland 1923-1998 which has just been published by Derek Garvey to mark the 75th anniversary of Ireland's oldest advertising body, which was founded on this very date, December 5th, 1923 in Clery's restaurant, Dublin.
