US President George W

US President George W. Bush today vowed to continue the war on terror into the new year as he hailed progress in the fight, in his message marking the start of 2003.

"The past year has been a time of achievement, progress, and renewed hope for the American people," the president said in a statement.

"To counter new threats, we are enhancing security at home, and we are part of the global coalition against terrorism that has made significant progress in opposing the forces of tyranny and oppression," he said.

He vowed to continue the fight against terror while working to "ensure the economic security of all our citizens," alluding to his promise to push a "jobs and growth package" bolstered by tax cuts in the coming year.
