The Christian Brothers have apologised to the victims of Brother Patrick John Kelly, who was jailed for eight years yesterday for sexual assaults on 11 boys over many years.
In a statement after the sentencing of Kelly, the Christian Brothers acknowledged the "extreme pain, hurt and trauma that have been suffered by the people who were abused by Brother Jack Kelly."
It said: "Brother Kelly's behaviour involved a huge betrayal of trust and was directly contrary to the spirit of the congregation. We condemn this behaviour completely."
The statement pointed out that Kelly had already apologised to his victims in court and the Christian Brothers congregation offered to meet them, if they so wished, so that the Christian Brothers could "extend to them personally their profound regret at what had happened".
The congregation also suggested that victims might contact Westcourt Child Protection Service.
This is an independent service set up by the Christian Brothers about three years ago which offers information about the services available to those who suffered abuse from the congregation.
According to a spokesman for the Christian Brothers this service offers advice on complaints, on contacting the civil authorities and a referral service to counselling. The number of the Westcourt service is 01-4902323.
The statement also pointed out that counselling and support could be obtained from the Faoiseamh helpline at 1800-331234 which was set up two years ago to help people abused by members of religious orders, and offers free counselling, either on the telephone or in person, to such victims.
The Kelly conviction is the first arising out of a series of cases being brought against members of the Christian Brothers.
As well as criminal cases, there is a number of civil cases pending on behalf of Kelly's victims.
