Florida - British businessman Krishna Maharaj, convicted of a double murder in the US 10 years ago, was taken off death row for the first time in a decade yesterday. Judge Jerald Bagley at Dade County Court, Florida, "vacated" - or lifted - Maharaj's death sentence for the murder of one of two Jamaicans in Miami, but rejected a defence application for a retrial.

Maharaj's defence solicitors described the move as a "very positive development" and will now apply to the Florida Supreme Court for both cases to be retried.
