The British Foreign Secretary Mr Jack Straw is to meet his Spanish counterpart Ms Ana Palacio in London later this month, a British Foreign Office spokeswoman said this afternoon.

She declined to say if the two would discuss the disputed British protectorate of Gibraltar on the southern tip of Spain.

The two ministers would discuss a series of international problems at the September 27th meeting, the spokeswoman said.

London and Madrid have failed to reach an agreement over the disputed rock, despite aiming to have the issue of the territory's future resolved by summer this year.

Britain and Spain have been in negotiations since July last year to reach a declaration on Gibraltar, possibly to include plans to share sovereignty.

The tiny territory, which has a population of only around 28,000 and sits perched on the southern tip of Spain facing Morocco, has been a British colony since the early 18th century.

Gibraltar's chief minister, Mr Peter Caruana, announced in July he would call a referendum after Straw said that Britain and Spain were close to reaching a permanent joint sovereignty deal on Gibraltar.

The poll is due to be held on November 7th.
