A five-year-old British boy of Pakistani origin has been kidnapped during a robbery in Pakistan, police said today.

The boy was kidnapped last night at a family home in the town of Jhelum, 120km southeast of Islamabad, police said.

"The robbers took away 150,000 rupees (€1,282) and some gold. When the family started crying the robbers also took away the child," said senior Jhelum police official Shahbaz Ahmed Hanjra.

The British High Commission confirmed the boy was British.

"A five-year-old boy has been kidnapped. We're in touch with his family and the local authorities are investigating," said a High Commission spokesman.

There was no indication of any motive other than robbery.
