A teenager narrowly escaped injury when a car crashed through the bedroom wall of a house in the North today.

Police were called to the Damolly Meadows area of Newry, Co Down, at 6am where a red Porsche car had hit the wall of a house and crashed into a bedroom.

Johnathon Funston (16) was in the room at the time, but escaped injury.

Rubble from the accident landed near the teenager's bed and his mother Elaine said the consequences could have been much worse if the car had hit the house at a different angle.

SDLP Assembly member for the area Dominic Bradley, who visited the scene and met the family, said it was sheer luck that no one was seriously injured.

"It is nothing short of miraculous that this young man was not seriously injured or worse," he said.

While the circumstances of the accident have yet to be established, Mr Bradley said the scene is close to a steep hill and residents in the area had been calling for warnings and traffic control measures to be put in place.

The boy's mother Elaine said: "There is a massive big hole in the child's room. His room was all adapted for him with padding on the walls and on the floor.

"If the car had come in another 12 inches to the left, it could have come under the window, hit the bed and trapped him, because he was at the door at the time."

Police later said a 32-year-old man had been charged with a number of motoring offences and an alleged assault on police and will appear at Newry Magistrates’ Court on March 4th.
