A 10-year-old boy who was rescued from a river has died in hospital, police said today.

A 10-year-old boy who was rescued from a river has died in hospital, police said today.

Daniel Andre was pulled from the River Bann in the Co Down village of Hilltown at around 5pm last night, and emergency staff worked to resuscitate him at the scene.

Police this morning confirmed that he died later in hospital after the incident at Leitrim Road.

Officers said the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Full details of the incident have yet to be confirmed, but it is believed that the boy was swimming with friends when he got into difficulties.

His family have paid tribute to the rescue efforts of people at the scene.

Daniel was rushed to hospital where he was said to be in a critical condition last night, before news of his death was released this morning.

Yesterday a teenage girl drowned in the River Liffey. The 16-year-old got into difficulty in the water at Wren's Nest Weir at Strawberry Beds.

A Garda spokesman said the girl was taken to James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown, where she was pronounced dead.
