A blast ripped through a police station in the town of Nassiriya in southern Iraq today, apparently causing casualties, witnesses said.

They said the explosion was very loud and ambulances rushed to the scene. There were no further details.

Nassiriya is controlled by Italian troops.

Insurgents have attacked many police stations across Iraq, sometimes using suicide car bombs, killing hundreds.
