Noel Hunt opened the scoring for the visitors on the 40th minute mark before Ger McCarthy struck for Pat's seven minutes after the break.
It went from bad to worse for Rovers on 65 minutes when Luke Dimech was sent off for a second bookable offence after being deemed to have elbowed Trevor Crolly. Curiously though Crolly was also booked for diving.
Parity was restored however when Crolly himself was sent off for his second bookable offence after taking his time over a throw in.
It appeared to be just the tonic that Rovers needed when Robinson popped up two minutes later - four minutes from time - to secure the points.
In Tolka Park Shelbourne moved into third place courtesy of late Stephen Geoghegan strike.
John O'Flynn had given Cork the lead on the stroke of halftime but Jim Gannon and then Geoghegan gave Rovers the points.
Table-toppers Bohemians maintained their stranglehold on the league courtesy of their 2-1 win over the students of UCD.
John Martin gave UCD the perfect start with a goal after just two minutes. But jubilation was short-lived as Stephen Caffrey scored for Bohs on the half hour.
Derek Coughlan was then on hand to win it for the league leaders with a 50th minute strike
