The east and south may look on and weep. The State's deprived areas are now known, in official circles no less, as the "BMW Regions".
Since Co Kerry and Co Clare were dropped from the Objective 1 list and the supposedly more prosperous counties were excluded anyway, the areas now seeking the increased funding are the Border, Midlands and West. Dublin bureaucrats take some glee in referring to them as the BMW Regions.
