RUBBISH bins remained unemptied in Limerick city yesterday for the third day following an unofficial strike by the city's refuse-collectors.

The president of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr Tadgh Kearney, urged the refuse-collectors to meet the Labour Relations Commission to find an amicable settlement.

A health warning was issued by the city council, and the mayor, Mr Kieran O'Hanlon, also urged the workers to go through the proper procedures as the public should not be punished.

Those involved in the unofficial dispute have been suspended for refusing to resume full wheelie-bin collections.

The dispute arose over the refuse-collectors' wages, and Mr Jim Kemmy TD, a member of the city council, has called on the corporation to make comparisons with wages of refuse-collectors in other counties available.
