Police officers were attacked by a gang of youths during a clampdown on underage drinkers in west Belfast last night.

Officers faced a barrage of missiles as they tried to deal with a crowds of around 30 youths, aged between 14 and 19.

A policeman was injured, although not seriously, and three arrests were made.

The attack started following reports last night that the youths were drinking and annoying residents in the Shaw's Road area.

A PSNI Land Rover was stoned and as police arrested a 19-year-old man at Rossnareen Park the trouble intensified.

As around six teenagers tried to pull the suspect from officers more vehicles came under attack at Shaw's Road and Corrib Avenue.

Two 15-year-olds were arrested, only for a new attempt to be made to break them free.

A PSNI spokesman urged parents to be aware what their children were up to and ensure they are not being supplied with alcohol.
