A YOUNG Limerick man has been refused bail on charges relating to the killing of a man in the city earlier this month.

Mr Noel Kelly (18), of O'Malley Park, Limerick, was charged with unlawfully and maliciously causing grievous bodily harm to John Keane (27), of O'Malley Park, and with having a single barrel sawn off shotgun with intent to endanger life. He was remanded in custody to appear in Limerick City Court again next Wednesday.

Judge Michael Reilly heard objections to bail by Det Garda Patrick Cox on the grounds of the seriousness of the charges.

Det Garda Patrick Cox told Judge Michael Reilly he had no doubt that there would be intimidation of witnesses if Mr Kelly was granted bail.

The defence solicitor, Mr Ted McCarthy, in reply to Det Garda Cox, said: "I put it to you that there would be no intimidation by my client." Det Garda Cox said he "would have to accept that, but the accused is under severe influence from other sources".

The State Solicitor, Mr John Power, said there was a solid basis for the view that there would be intimidation of witnesses if bail was granted. He added that other charges were likely to be brought.
