LONDON - British painter Francis Bacon's The Seated Figure (Red Cardinal), which has not been seen by the public for 35 years, was auctioned yesterday by Christies for £1.5 million.

The 1960 work, from the celebrated papal series which is largely responsible for Bacon's reputation today, was known to experts only from a black and white photograph.
