Baby dies after fall from flat on fourth floor

GARDAÍ investigating the death of a 21-month-old baby boy after he fell from a fourth-floor apartment window in Dublin yesterday believe the incident was a tragic accident.

The fall occurred at apartments in Inchicore in Dublin just after 10am.

The baby was in the apartment at the private Tramyard complex with his mother and appears to have woken up without her realising. He then somehow fell out of a bedroom window.

He landed on a vehicle ramp leading to the apartment block’s underground car park, which effectively increased his fall to a five-storey drop.

A woman saw the baby on the ramp and alerted his mother in the apartment above while also ringing the emergency services.

The baby was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in nearby Crumlin.

The boy, named locally as Sebastian Periere Kus, was critically ill on arrival at the hospital, having sustained multiple injuries, including to his head.

Medical staff tried for hours to save him but were not successful and the boy was pronounced dead in the early afternoon.

The child was due to celebrate his second birthday in July. The boy’s mother is a Brazilian national and was being cared for last night by friends. The boy’s father is from Poland.

The apartment from which the boy fell was examined by gardaí yesterday while members of the Garda Technical Bureau also examined the car-park ramp.

The area was sealed off throughout yesterday and the place where the boy landed was covered with plastic to preserve it for a full forensic examination.

However, those inquiries are said to be precautionary and at this stage, gardaí are of the view that there are no criminal matters to be investigated. The Garda investigations will inform the coroner’s inquest into the boy’s death.

It is believed the child’s fall was captured on CCTV cameras in the area around the apartment block. That is being reviewed in an effort to determine exactly how the boy came to fall from the window.
