The Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI) has welcomed the High Court decision that newspapers should not be given access to individual schools' performances in the 1998 Leaving Certificate.

The ASTI president, Ms Catherine Fitzpatrick, said the publication of league tables would have a negative and damaging impact on schools and would violate the principle of treating all students equally as it valued only the ability to succeed at examinations to the exclusion of other talents.
