A man and a woman were arrested in a loyalist part of Newtownabbey last night after three pipe bombs were discovered during a security operation across Belfast, police said. A number of homes were evacuated in Newtownabbey, just outside north Belfast, while army bomb disposal experts searched the area.
Suspicious items were seized and taken for examination from a house in the loyalist Sandy Row area in the south of the city, where another man was arrested.
There have been 51 pipe bombings in Northern Ireland so far this year.
