Gardaí believe Mr Brett (35) was under severe financial pressure from a Dublin drug supplier.

He had been involved in a major drugs gang in Cork city with his brother, John, who is serving an 11-year sentence after he was caught with more than €600,000 worth of ecstasy in 1999.

Mr Brett had also been caught drug dealing when he and another man were arrested with more than €100,000 worth of ecstasy tablets in south Cork on October 22nd, 1998. Brett was jailed for two years and released in 2003.
