The tourist who desires to "arise and go now, and go to Innishfree" has been given the option of being guided there on two wheels.
North West Tourism has just introduced a facility, from its Sligo headquarters, for visitors to join in guided cycling tours of the countryside that inspired the poetry of W.B. Yeats.
Until this year the "Yeats Experience" had been somewhat intangible, points out Ms Roisin Sorohan of North West Tourism. But developments such as the renovation and reopening of the church at Drumcliffe, with an audio-visual display provided there, have facilitated a more focused approach.
The Yeats Country Cycle Tours cover about 20 miles of countryside, with a local guide offering insights into the history, folklore and culture of the region.
About 21/2 hours of cycling time are involved in each four-hour tour, "so there are plenty of refreshment stops en route", said Ms Sorohan. Rain gear and bicycles are provided, and two different routes are offered daily.
The tours take place six days a week, from July to September, and at other times by arrangement. The cost is £8 per person, with group rates also available.
Mr Andrew Lang of Sligo is the guide for all the tours at present. "He's a very fit guy," remarked a colleague.
