Palestinian President Yasser Arafat has called for an urgent meeting of the world's largest Muslim body following Israeli missile strikes on the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Mr Arafat made the appeal during a telephone call to Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani who is the current head of the 56-nation Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC).

Mr Arafat briefed him about the Israeli attacks on areas of the Palestinian Authority and about the Israeli strikes and asked His Highness to convene an urgent Islamic summit to look into these attacks, a Qatari official was quoted as saying.

He said Qatar would immediately start making the necessary contacts.
