THE GARDA and the Police Service of Northern Ireland issued a joint appeal yesterday for information about a fatal hit-and-run incident last weekend.

Fintan Traynor (20), Lemgare, Clontibret, Co Monaghan, was killed when he was struck by a vehicle on a road near his home, close to the south Armagh border.

His body was discovered by relatives on Sunday morning, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardaí believe the driver, who failed to stop, was returning to the North from a late-night drinking session in the Republic.

“We believe there are a number of people who may have information which will help us identify the driver and we are appealing to them to come forward,” said a senior Garda spokesman.

A similar plea for information was made by the Police Service of Northern Ireland in Armagh.
