Ottawa - Police arrested 87 protesters in Ottawa yesterday during a demonstration against plans for a Free Trade Area of the Americas, which critics say would result in further impoverishment of poor countries.

The protesters were hauled away by police after lining up in twos and threes and then scrambling over barricades outside the foreign ministry building.

The 400-strong crowd, many of them chanting and waving banners, was demanding access to the documents Canada and 33 other countries in the hemisphere are using to negotiate the proposed free trade area, or FTAA. x
