Some 11 people were arrested and two hospitalised after a mini-riot in Argentina as thousands of revellers turned out to celebrate St Patrick's Day.

The arrests were made following disturbances, when a man tried to stop a group of youths damaging the front of his supermarket in Buenos Aires.

Police were called and baton-charged the crowd as bottles and other missiles were thrown. The shop owner and a policeman at the scene were injured after both were struck in the face by flying objects.

A large part of Argentina's population is of Irish descent and Patrick's Day celebrations have become increasingly popular there during the past few years. Local politicians have called for action to control the massive binge-drinking which usually marks the day in Buenos Aires and other cities.
