A proposal to extend the boundary of Ireland's tidiest town, Kenmare, Co Kerry, is being opposed by the planning watchdog An Taisce.

While An Taisce believes some expansion is necessary, the type of boundary change now on public display would "have significant negative impacts" and would distort the heritage town.

The proposal, which will be voted on by county councillors next month, is leading to sharp division. Tourism officials are worried that Kenmare is growing too big, too fast. Others argue that development has halted because of planning difficulties.

The proposal is to extend the town to double its present size and add on 1.5 miles in some parts to the urban area. A further variation to provide industrial/commercial zoning only in a secondary special amenity area is also proposed. An Taisce is also opposing this variation, largely on the grounds that the 18 or so acres have been chosen "because of availability, rather than suitability".
