A ban on dangerous drivers across all-Ireland will be in place by next year, according to ministers from Northern Ireland and the Republic.

Northern Ireland Department of Environment minister Arlene Foster said it was not acceptable that drivers disqualified in the North could escape the restriction in the Republic.

She said work was ongoing on mutual recognition of penalty points and that measures agreed at today's meeting with the Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey would also apply in Great Britain.

"There's been a lot of work going on behind the scenes to rectify that (anomaly)," she said. "We are hoping the legislation will be in place to deal with that. It is not satisfactory if you are disqualified in the UK that you can go down south and drive."

Mr Dempsey said there would be a meeting involving himself and Ms Foster with their London counterpart over the issue of disqualified drivers in January.

Today's summit in Killadeas, Co Fermanagh, also backed restoring two bridges on the Tyrone/Monaghan border and construction of a bridge at Narrow Water linking Co Louth with Co Down.

The Irish Government has granted funding to Louth County Council to undertake preliminary work.
