Ms Anne Maher, chief executive of the Irish Pensions Board, said the AIB fraud case was "obviously not good news for pension funds, but it is not a cause for panic either".

Diversification of investments means that a fund could not be stricken by one such incident.

"The way Irish pension funds operate means they do have a wide diversification so they can withstand volatility in specific stock problems," she added.

"The majority of Irish pension fund people are in what are known as these managed funds which do have a very wide basket of different types of investment.

"Most Irish trustees of Irish pension funds are very aware of stock-specific risk so they would not expose themselves to any particular stock."

She added: "So I would say there was no panic - not good news but we are not aware of any major problems for Irish pension funds at this point."
