Ahern to discuss constitution with Berlusconi

The Taoiseach travels to Rome today for discussions on a new EU constitution.

The Taoiseach travels to Rome today for discussions on a new EU constitution.

The meeting with Italian Prime Minister, Mr Silvio Berlusconi, has been described by Mr Ahern as being "particularly important".

It is the first meeting of the two leaders since the Italian EU presidency failed to reach consensus on the constitution.

"The Italian Presidency made significant progress on the new European Constitution during its term and the Italian Prime Minister will have an important insight into the process," Mr Ahern said.

"My consultations with EU leaders on the IGC are ongoing. I have found my counterparts united in their support for our efforts and committed to finding a way forward."
