The State Solicitor for North Kildare and Wicklow has taken a High Court challenge to the Attorney General's refusal to allow him remain in his post after the age of 65.

Mr Charles E. Coonan, who will be 65 on November 30th, and has been state solicitor in his area since 1974, claims he is entitled under his contract to continue working until the age of 70 should he so wish and provided he is in good health.

Counsel said the AG's policy now was that state solicitors should retire at 65 unless there were exceptional circumstances.
