Around two-fifths of drivers in a government survey in Northern Ireland have said they break the speed limit on motorways.

According to the Northern Ireland Road Safety Monitor 2007, done for the Department of the Environment, 42 per cent said they normally broke the speed limit on motorways, 30 per cent on dual carriageways, 16 per cent on roads outside a built-up area and 15 per cent inside a built-up area.

And it also revealed the vast majority of people do not think anyone should be allowed to drive after consuming alcohol, and that the penalties for this are not severe enough.

Of those who exceed the speed limit on motorways, 90 per cent broke it by five miles per hour or more. Only 5 per cent said they were 21 miles per hour above the speed limit.
